The Local Area

The campsite is just a 5 minute walk from the centre of Chalandray, a typical rural French village. The Greenwich Meridian line crosses through the centre of the village and through the woods of the campsite. Located in the village is a Boulangerie Pâtisserie, Spar Supermarket with post office and a Kebab Snack Bar. Chalandray

The surrounding region has much to offer old and young alike, with the relatively flat landscape ideal for walking and cycling. There are a number of official walking circuits on each side of the village: you can download the maps here for both the blue and yellow walks. If you are a keen cyclist, La Velo Francette running from Caen to La Rochelle passes through Parthenay, close to the campsite.

The famous Golf de Forges is only 14km away, and also one of the largest golf courses in the country is just 39 km away near Loudun. If you prefer riding, the Poney Club Ayron is a few minutes' drive and Le Cadre Noir de Saumur (National Horse Centre) is an hour away in Saumur.

Children will love La Vallée des Singes (Monkey Valley) at Romagne; La Planète des Crocodiles Indoor Crocodile Centre at Civaux; and Les Géants du Ciel (birds of prey) at Chauvigny, where you will also find a castle and the VéloRail: a unique rail bike that you can pedal round the medieval town.

VéloRail de Chauvigny

At only 20 minutes away, we are ideally situated for a visit to one of the most popular theme parks in France - Futuroscope is a fantastic theme park packed with virtual reality rides and shows.

If you are looking for history and culture, the vibrant town of Poitiers with its picturesque medieval centre is only 30km away. Saumur, Chinon and Tours along the Loire Valley are all within easy reach and also the beautiful chateaux of Amboise, Villandry and Ussé are all well worth a visit.

Moncontour Active Park
Also worth visiting, is the village of Moncontour, a pretty, historical village, hidden amongst a sea of sunflowers and melon fields. Watched over by its 11th century donjon, Moncontour has a water sports lake and is surrounded by branches of the River Dive with beautiful forest and riverside walks and the ideal spot for fishing. We hear the fish are very big!

With so much open countryside and so many attractions in the Poitou-Charentes area, the problem will be deciding what to do!
